Rolex and its products are so iconic that almost every popular model has developed a nickname. The company produces many of the most iconic and sought after watches and as such, as a range of nicknames have evolved over time, as collectors affectionately identify their favourite Rolex watches. These nicknames are often inspired by soft drinks, superheroes and even iconic green frog.
One important point to make is that all of these nicknames are just that—nicknames. With very few exceptions, each one of these nicknames were invented by the collector community and never officially used or sanctioned by Rolex itself.
So here's a quick breakdown of the most commonly used Rolex nicknames.
In 2013 the Rolex GMT Master II 116710 BLNR aka "Rolex Batman" was released with blue/black 24 hour bezel and blue GMT hand. The BLNR quickly became knows as the Batman and wears a Rolex Oyster bracelet. The 116710 was eventually discontinued in 2018. The 116710 BLNR is powered by the Rolex calibre 3186 with date window at the 3 o'clock position. The model was upgraded in 2019 to the 126710 BLNR and fitted with the newer calibre 3285 movement.
The Rolex Batgirl was released in 2019 and features the same case, dial, movement and blue/black bezel insert of the "Batman" (126710 BLNR) but with the addition of the Rolex Jubilee bracelet.
The Rolex GMT Master 1675 was in production from 1959 until 1980 and was initially only available with a red/blue Rolex Pepsi bezel insert. Prior to 1965 the GMT Master was powered by the Rolex calibre 1565 automatic movement - from 1965 the calibre 1575 was used. Early examples of the 1675 can be found with small GMT hands and gilt glossy dials. From around 1966 matte dials were fitted. Rare and collectable version of the Rolex GMT Master 1675 include the Pointed Crown Guard, exclamation point and the Long E.
The Rolex GMT Master 16750 was in production from 1981 until 1988 and introduced the quickset date feature with the Rolex calibre 3075 automatic movement. The GMT Master 16750 was available with a red/blue Pepsi bezel insert. Early examples of the GMT Master 16750 were fitted with matte dials with printed hour markers. These models are very rare and collectable. Later models feature gloss black dials with applied hour markers in white gold. The Rolex GMT Master 16750 was fitted with an acrylic crystal and available with either Oyster or Jubilee bracelets.
The Rolex GMT Master 16700 was released in 1988 and was powered by the Rolex calibre 3175 automatic movement with GMT and date functions. The red GMT hand enabled the wearer to track two times zones - ideal for pilots and frequent travellers. The GMT Master 16700 was a replacement for the GMT Master 16750 and intended to be a cheaper option to the GMT Master II 16710 which was released at the same time. The Rolex GMT Master 16700 was available with a BLRO red/blue Pepsi bezel insert. The GMT Master 16700 was eventually discontinued in 1999.
The Rolex GMT Master II 16710 BLRO was in production from 1989 until 2007 and was available with the iconic red/blue Pepsi bezel insert. The GMT Master II 16710 was powered by the Rolex calibre 3185 automatic movement with GMT and date functions. Prior to 1999 the GMT Master II 16170 was fitted with a SWISS T25 dial which featured Tritium hour markers and hands. In 1999 watches were fitted with the "Swiss Only” dial and from 2000 onwards all watches with fitted with SWISS MADE dials with SuperLuminova hour markers and hands. The last of the 16710’s were fitted with the 3186 automatic movement.
In 2018 Rolex released the GMT Master 126710 BLRO with blue/red bezel insert in Cerachrom. The GMT Master II 126710 is powered by the calibre 3285 automatic movement with GMT function and 70 hour power reserve. The 126710 BLRO has a 40mm stainless steel case, sapphire crystal, a 100m depth rating and wears either a Rolex Oyster or Rolex Jubilee bracelet.
The Rolex GMT Master II 16710 was in production from 1989 until 2007 and was also available with a black/red Rolex Coke bezel insert. Unlike the Rolex GMT Master II 16710BLRO and black bezel 16710LN, the Coke bezel version of the GMT Master II did not have a lettered designation on the green Swimpruf hang tag and would be displayed as 16710.
Rolex updated the design of the GMT Master in 1983 when it released the GMT Master II 16760. This new model featured a sapphire crystal and updated 3085 automatic movement with quickset hour hand enabling the wearer to track a third time zone. The Rolex GMT Master II 16760 became know as the "Fat Lady" or "Sophia Loren" due to its extra thick case design and was only available with red/black Coke bezel insert.
The Rolex GMT Master 6542 was released by Rolex in 1954 and originally featured a red/blue Pepsi bakelite bezel having been designed in collaboration is Pan-Am Airways. Specifically designed to to allow the wearer to track two different time zones, the GMT Master was issued by Pan-Am to their crews on long-haul flights. The GMT Master 6542 became know by collectors as the "Pussy Galore" having been worn by actress Honor Blackman in the 1964 film, Goldfinger.
Released in 2003 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the watch, the Rolex Submariner 16610LV Rolex Kermit featured the now iconic green LV 'lunette verte' bezel insert. The watch was powered by the same calibre 3135 automatic movement as the standard Rolex Submariner. In addition to the green bezel, the 16610LV also distinguished itself from the standard 16610 with the inclusion of the MAXI dial featuring larger hour marker and hands. The Rolex Submariner 16610LV - also known as the'Kermit' - featured the Oyster bracelet with folding clasp and divers extension, black MAXI dial, trip-lock crown and green LV uni-directional divers bezel. In 2004 Rolex deleted the lug holes and from 2007 Rolex added the engraved inner rehaut which displayed the serial number of the watch at the 6 o'clock position.
The Rolex Submariner 116610LV Hulk was released in 2010, replacing the 16610LV Kermit. The LV or 'lunette verte' was originally released in 2003 the celebrate the watches 50th anniversary. The 116610LV featured the 40mm MAXI case, LV green ceramic bezel with divers scale, green dial, calibre 3135 automatic movement and oyster bracelet with glide-lock clasp. The Rolex Submariner 116610LV 'Rolex Hulk' was eventually discontinued in 2020.
The Rolex Submariner 126610LV was released in 2020 and features a 41mm stainless steel case, black dial, green bezel and Rolex Oyster bracelet. The watch is powered by the Rolex calibre 3235 automatic movement with 70 hour power reserve. The Rolex Submariner 126610LV became known as the Rolex Starbuck due to its resemblance to the popular Coffee chains logo.
The Rolex Sea-Dweller 1665 was in production from 1967 until 1980. The watch featured a 40 stainless steel case with helium escape value, a matte black dial with printed hour markers and two lines of rex text. This gave the 1665 the nickname, the 'Double Red'. The 'Double Red' also featured an acrylic 'Tropic' crystal, a depth rating of 610m or 2000 ft, and an oyster bracelet with divers extension. The Rolex Sea-Dweller 1665 was powered by the Rolex calibre 1575 automatic movement.
In 1977 the red writing on the dial disappeared and was replaced with white text.
The Rolex Deepsea D-Blue 116660 arrived in 2014 in tribute to the historic solo dive of director James Cameron who reached the bottom of the Mariana Trench. Cameron reached a depth of nearly 7 miles in his submarine, the Deepsea Challanger in 2014. This Deepsea D-Blue was identical to the regular 116660 in every way other than the dial. The D-Blue "Cameron" featured a graduated blue to black dial with the word DEEPSEA in bright green.
