On an initial inspection the Rolex Sea Dweller is very similar to the Rolex Submariner. However there are couple distinguishing features which make the Rolex Sea Dweller instantly recognisable. The Rolex Sea Dweller lacks a date cyclops and has a greatly increased depth rating thanks to the helium escape valve on the side of the stainless steel case. The Rolex Sea Dweller 1665 'Double Red' was released by Rolex 1967 as a result of a requirement for a dive watch with a greater depth rating than the Submariner. The 'Double Red' Sea-Dweller evolved into the 'Great White' when the text on the dial changed from red to white. The Rolex Sea Dweller 1665 originally had a depth rating of just 610 meters (2,000ft). The Rolex Sea Dweller continued to evolve over the year to include the following models.

The Rolex GMT Master was released by Rolex in 1954 with the reference 6542 and evolved over the years to include the 1675, 16750 and 16700. The stainless steel GMT Master was only available with the classic red/blue Pepsi bezel or all black bezel.

The Rolex GMT Master II arrived with the 16760, aka "Fat Lady" in 1983. This particular model was only in production until 1988 and saw the introduction of the red/black Coke bezel. The Rolex GMT Master II saw a major design change in 2007 with the introduction of a ceramic bezel. The black bezel GMT Master II 116710LN was joined by the blue/black 116710BLNR or Rolex Batman in 2014. The stainless steel Rolex GMT Master II include the blue/black 126710BLNR and red/blue 126710BLRO Pepsi. Both models are available on Oyster or Jubilee bracelets.

In 1971, Rolex released the Rolex Explorer II 1655. This watch featured the iconic fixed 24 hour bezel and over-sized orange GMT hand. The watch was originally designed specifically for explorers, or 'potholers' to know the exact time, either AM or PM, without relying on daylight. It was not until the release of the Rolex Explorer II 16570 in 1989 that now familiar Mercedes-style hands were fitted to the Explorer II. The Rolex Explorer II 16570 is available with black or "Polar" white dials. The watch features a 40mm stainless steel case, fixed bezel with 24 hour markings and a red GMT hand. The Explorer II became the 216570 in 2011. The case grew to 42mm and the GMT hand changed to orange.

HOW MUCH IS A PRE-OWNED ROLEX?

HOW MUCH IS AN OLD ROLEX WATCH WORTH? 

If vintage, used Rolex watches kept in good condition, can be worth very large amounts of money if sold properly and at the right time. 

For example, a vintage pre-owned Rolex Submariner 5513 Milsub Watch (which is one of the most highly sought-after models) from the 1960’s-70’s can fetch anywhere up to £140,000 at auction today.

DO ROLEX WATCHES HOLD THEIR VALUE?

Generally speaking, most Rolex watches from the professional rage including the Rolex Submariner and Rolex Sea Dweller will hold their value after they are first purchased new and appreciate over time. However, certain models such as the stainless steel Rolex Daytona will often sell for double the original retail price. 

But all pre-owned Rolex watches will hold their value if they are kept in good condition. This means keeping them in clean, working condition. 

If you are a Swiss Watch collector, and you want to keep hold of your vintage Rolex watch for a number of years in hopes of auctioning it, you are advised to keep your watch in its case and store in a temperature-regulated area that’s away from moisture.

WHAT IS THE BEST SECOND HAND ROLEX TO BUY?

There are many varieties of men’s Rolex watches that have been designed and produced over the years. Rolex has appeared on many Hollywood wrists -- including Steve McQueen and Paul Newman -- and has also been a huge motif in the classic Bond franchise. 

Because of this, good-quality vintage Rolex watches can fetch a fair amount at auction, depending on the model, era and the level of care that has been taken to preserve their original condition. 

In terms of the Rolex Submariner, second hand models that have the most value and are therefore the best to buy for collectors are 5513's, while the best vintage Rolex Daytona to buy would be the 116520 with white dial. 

WHAT IS THE CHEAPEST ROLEX WATCH?

Generally speaking the cheapest pre owned Rolex watches available will be the less popular and older models such as the Rolex Oyster Precision. Nice examples of a vintage Rolex Oyster Precision can be purchased from around £2000. You can find cheaper watches but they and they won't include their original boxes and papers or even original bracelets.

The cheapest Rolex Submariner currently for sale in the UK on Chrono24 is priced at £6250. Once again, this is watch only. The cheapest full set Rolex Submariner 16610 is £8150.
