Officine Panerai was founded in Florence, Italy in 1860 by Giovanni Panerai. Now a subsidiary of Richemont, the Swiss-based luxury goods company, Panerai watches are known for their technical superiority and stylish design, and were notably used by an elite unit of Italian frogmen during World War II. With the exception of the GPF 2/56, all Panerai watches are designed and manufactured by Rolex. Models such as the Radiomir (which got its name from “radio mir”, a self-luminous radium-based material) and the Luminor (which uses similar technology, but is activated by tritium) are among the most popular examples of this luxury brand. Panerai watches come in four distinct ranges — Historic, Contemporary, Manifattura and Special Editions, which are limited-run models with the year of manufacture in the name.
