Rolex Explorer 1016 "Tropical Dial" (1965)
Welcome to the sale of our amazing Rolex Explorer 1016. This particular watch dates to 12th April 1965 (Serial: 1053683) and retains its original and highly desirable gilt dial. The pictures do not do the dial enough justice - it's insane. The dial has aged to perfection with a uniform tropical or "Wabi-Sabi" patina. You simple will not find another like this, especially one with the original Rolex warranty certificate! The 36mm Rolex Explorer 1016 is a design icon with its distinctive 3, 6, 9 hour markers and Mercedes type hands and powered by the Rolex calibre 1560 automatic movement. This watch was serviced by Rolex UK in December 2021 where a new Oyster case and Oyster bracelet were fitted. In addition to the original warranty book, the service card is included as is a letter from Rolex stating that the serial number has been changed. The ultra rare 1963 'Men Who Guide' featuring JFK on the front cover is also included. We offer free UK delivery and a 24 month warranty on all our Rolex watches for sale. All our also watches also include a 14 day no question return policy. Customers have 14 days to inform Swiss Watch Trader that they wish to return the item and a further 14 days to actually return the item.
In 1953, Sir Edmond Hillary and Tenzing Norgay summited Mount Everest wearing modified Oyster Perpetuals. Neither were actually wearing an Explorer but Rolex were quick to take advantage of this amazing feat of human endurance and launched the 6289. The reference 6530 was the first model to have Explorer on the dial.
