A second hand watch is quite simply a watch that has one or more previous owners. A second hand watch doesn't necessarily mean that the watch has been worn though. Our collection of second hand watches include watches that have been purchased from a high street autherised dealer and then immediately sold on by the owner without even being tried on. This is often the case with Rolex watches where the value on the secondary market is far in excess of the retail price. The market for second hand watches has never been stronger or more accessible. Buyers now have the choice of buying second hand watches from well establish watch dealers as well as eBay, Chrono24, forums and Facebook. Buyers also have more security than every when buying online but there are always scare stories and things you must consider when buying any second hand watch online. This page you will hopefully provide you with some useful information that will help you when buying a second hand watch.
BUYING SECOND HAND WATCHES ONLINE
When buying any second hand watch online or in person always check online reviews and feedback to ensure that the seller is honest and genuine. Verified reviews left by previous customers on website such as Trustpilot and Google are a great way of seeing how the watch dealer / seller operates. Also be sure you check the company out on their social media channels including Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. Check that they are posting images of the actual watches for sale and have a reasonable following. Check their website for high quality and most importantly original and un-edited images of the the watches for sale and you are interested in purchasing. Don't be afraid ask for a video if aren’t 100% sure on the condition or can’t quite see certain aspects of the watch for sale. If a seller is serious about providing the customer with all the information required to make the buying experience as stress free as possible then they will be more than happy to help. If the seller does not offer the option to view the watch in person prior to making a decision, or at least do so through high-quality imagery, then you may want to look elsewhere. At Swiss Watch Trader we always tell our customers to purchase the very best second hand watch, in the best condition, at the very best price with as much or the original packaging and paraphernalia as possible. Original boxes and warranty papers/card are a must with any good quality second hand watch, manuals and hang tags are essential but not necessarily deal breakers (there are exceptions). Please get in touch if you have any questions about our any of our second hand watches for sale.
HOW MUCH IS A SECOND HAND WATCH?
Until recently, buying a second hand watch offered huge savings over buying new. However the current market is such that certian watches will have a higher value on the secondary market than their original retail price. Watches like the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 116500 and Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711/1A are almost impossible to buy new and as a result prices for "second hand" examples are many times the RRP. Second hand watches can be purchased at any price. TAG Heuer watches tend to be the most inexpensive of the Swiss brands when purchased second hand. A nice TAG Heuer Aquaracer or TAG Heuer Carrera can be purchased for around £1000, a saving of 50% over their RRP. Breitling watches are also a good choice on the second hand market, as are Omega and Panerai as there is often large savings to be made over buying new.
ARE SECOND HAND WATCHES A GOOD INVESTMENT?
Generally speaking, a good quality second hand watch will hold, and on occasion, increase in value if purchased at the right price. There are exceptions to this rule and some research may be required if you are looking at the watch purely as an investment. It is often the case that a Rolex watch, especially one from the sports range like the Rolex Submariner or Rolex Daytona, will increase in value year after year. In 2010 a second hand Rolex Submariner 16610 could be purchased for around £3500. In 2022 the same watch will retail at anywhere between £10,000 and £14,000 depending on condition. We always advise our customers to buy the best possible second hand watch within their budget. Boxes and papers are also essential if you want to maximise any potential gain in value.
THE BEST SECOND HAND WATCH BRANDS
All Swiss watch brands including Rolex, Omega, Breitling and Tudor can be purchased second-hand. Deciding which is the best second-hand watch is subject to debate. Some may say that Rolex is the best second hand watch brand, others will say its Breitling or Omega. Whilst Rolex may have the best residual value of all second hand watches, the purchase prices are out of reach for many people. If you are lucky enough to be able to afford a Rolex Submariner you know for sure that the watch will increase in value year after year. A Breitling Superocean will cost a fraction of the price of a Rolex Submariner, and therefore more accessible, but will not have the same yearly increase in value.
